Goals & Objectives

Our mission is guided by our commitment to empower students to achieve their goals by providing access to high quality and affordable higher education. We provide career programs, transfer programs, developmental education, and lifelong- learning opportunities, with a focus on excellence in all that we do. The Sheds Hospitality Management outlines specific goals for its students. On completion of the undergraduate degree from the Hospitality Management (HM) program, students should possess the skills below.


Analytical, Critical, and Strategic Thinking Skills

Students should be able to:

  • Engage in critical analysis and creative thinking.
  • Apply the basic principles of analytical thinking and problem solving when examining hospitality management issues.
  • Analyze trends and organizational data and develop business strategies for the hospitality industry.
  • Collect and evaluate information to make sound decisions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate concepts and theories across functional business domains (e.g. Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Operations, etc.).

Substantive Content Knowledge

Students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function effectively in a diverse and global organizational environment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the application of selected technology.
  • Synthesize and evaluate core concepts in the areas of hospitality accounting, finance, human resources, marketing, operations, and quantitative methods.

Leadership, Communication, Interpersonal, and Social Skills

Students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate personal and professional standards for ethical decision-making and social behavior.
  • Evaluate personal and professional goals and development based on perceived strengths and potential for life-long learning.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read, listen, and clearly express themselves using written, oral, visual, and quantitative methods to communicate effectively with superiors, coworkers, customers, and members of the community.
  • Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills needed for managing diverse and global hospitality operations.


The SHEDS College of Hospitality Management uses multiple measures to assess how well we are meeting our program goals, including:

  • Job placement data – The SHEDS College enrolls an average of roughly 90 undergraduate students, and more than 30 graduate each year. Our graduates consistently achieve more than 90 percent placement in hospitality management jobs. In spring 2015, the job placement rate was 94 percent.
  • Graduates accepted management positions in hotels, restaurants, corporate dining, health care and educational feeding, stadiums and arenas, meeting and event planning, sales, consulting, country clubs and city clubs, casinos, and senior living.
  • Student Ratings of Teaching Effectiveness are collected for every course every semester and allow us to continuously evaluate and upgrade our classes.
  • Alumni Feedback – We engage in frequent alumni roundtables with alumni and industry professionals to discuss how we can best prepare students for their first positions after graduation, and for long-term career success.
